World Science Day for Peace and Development
Required Skills for Global Astronomy
Online webinar, 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. (EDT) Sunday 10th November 2024
In the framework of the “World Science Day for Peace and Development,” the North American Office of Astronomy for Development (NA-ROAD), in collaboration with the Mexican Office of Astronomy for Outreach (OAO-NOC-MX), the Mexican Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE-NAEC-MX), and the Astrofísicos en Acción outreach organization, invite Spanish speakers over 18 years old to participate in the “Required Skills for Global Astronomy” webinar.
The mission of the NA-ROAD is to further promote the use of astronomy as a tool for social development. For that reason, the objective of his astronomy-themed webinar is to reflect on the importance of soft skills in the work environment.
The special guests to the webinar and the astronomy topics they will talk about are:
1. International collaborations promote world peace
Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI)
PhD.(c) Andrea Muñóz (Astronomy Institute – National Autonomous University of Mexico)
Event Horizon Telescope (EHT)
PhD. Iván Rodríguez (National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics)
2. Publicly funded Research
Mexico UK submillimeter Camera (MUSCAT)
PhD. Marcial Becerril (School of Physics and Astronomy – Cardiff University)
Vera Rubin Observatory (LSST)
PhD. Alma González (Department of Physics – University of Guanajuato)
3. Communicating scientific research
Astrofísicos en Acción
PhD. Patricia Hernández (Research Center in Physics and Mathematics Sciences – Autonomous University of Nuevo León)
Astrobitos
PhD. Karla Arellano (University of Edinburgh School of Physics and Astronomy)
The webinar stimulates collaboration between attendees and dialogue with the invited researchers. Recognition of participation will be extended by the organizers to the attendees who actively participate in the different dynamics of the webinar, as well as in the “live” opening and/or closing panels of the commemorative activities for the “World of Science for Peace and Development.”
The webinar will take place online, on Sunday, November 10th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT (11 a.m. to 3 p.m. CDMX), through the virtual platform Google Meet. The talks are accompanied by activities to be carried out personally or in teams. Thus, at the beginning of the webinar attendees will be distributed into working groups, which will maintain their structure throughout the event. Each working group will be guided by one of the event’s guest researchers. For this reason, the session will be “restricted”, that is, only those selected to participate will be able to attend.
For logistical reasons, a maximum of 60 virtual attendees will be accepted. If the demand for applications warrants it, the possibility of opening a new date will be analysed for applicants who could not be accepted in the webinar on November 10th.
